Thought for the month

THE VICAR WRITES FOR MAY
Outside our church of St Katharine on Easter Eve a newly kindled fire was lit from which was taken the light for the new Easter candle. All that was left after the small fire had gone out were some ashes. It got me thinking that in every cell of our human bodies something similar is constantly taking place. Cells take up nutrients from the blood and, by means of a chemical reaction, burn up the food, changing most of it into energy. Occasionally the body fails to use up some of the energy, as I’m often reminded when forced to contemplate my rather too well-padded shape in the mirror! Like a fire that burns and leaves ashes, the small cells in our bodies also leave behind waste products which have to be constantly cleaned up to keep us ticking along in good nick.
